Consistency over perfection.

One of the most common question I get asked is “how can I stay motivated?”.
Motivation is something we all struggle with from time to time, but it seems to have hit more now than ever. It can be difficult to keep pursuing a goal or even keeping on top of your morning routine during a pandemic. But by replacing perfection with consistency, it can become a little easier.
This is something I’ve thought about and struggled with myself, but when I realised this morning that I’m close to my target weight, it clicked. I wasn’t striving for perfection, I had my Chinese takeaway, I drank alcohol, I celebrated my mums birthday, I was far from sticking to a strict diet. But I was being consistent. I stuck with making the small changes consistently.
Same goes for working on my mindset. For example, Sometimes the thought of doing my daily meditation can feel tedious, but by doing a little 5-10 minute session a day or simply just trying my best, can result in a habit forming, and a more consistent positive mindset.
I’m still working towards my goals. Changing is hard but by replacing old habits with small and easy tasks, I’m making new positive ones. These habits will soon result in a lifestyle change and I can reach my goals without having to suffer a terribly hard routine that feels impossible to stick to.
My point is, you don’t have to diet hard and cut out all your favourite foods. You don’t have to do an hour yoga or meditation session each day. The more times you do the small tasks the easier it becomes and you can gradually push yourself a little more. You can achieve a lot by NOT striving for perfection but instead working on keeping it consistent. Being consistent with small tasks allows you to form habits, therefore allowing you to reach your goals and make it a lifestyle change. But most importantly you will actually enjoy the journey.
A little each day goes a long way.
